All in the Family

A compilation of stories from multigenerational ophthalmologists.

Not everyone can say that they love their job. Fortunately for me, I can. For the past 12 years, I have worked as an editor at Bryn Mawr Communications, and, for 10 of those years, as Editor-in-Chief of this publication. From the nature of my profession, to the people I work with, down to the company culture, I truly love what I do and whom I do it with and for.

I enjoy coming to work every day, corresponding and collaborating with the world’s most prestigious (and nicest) cataract and refractive surgeons in an effort to create compelling, timely, and useful content. Throughout the years, I and the medical editors of CRST Europe have prided ourselves on curating the kinds of articles that surgeons not only want to read but will refer to in the operating room, in their daily practice, and even at the dinner table with colleagues, family, and friends. We have tweaked our formula over the years, and we will continue to do so in order to remain a leader in this space, but our mission—to foster peer-to-peer education and to inspire both the current and the next generation of ophthalmologists—always remains.

Judging by the heartfelt articles in this cover focus, many of your peers love their jobs, too. In fact, half of these contributors love their jobs enough that they inspired a son or daughter to pursue ophthalmology, and the other half—the sons and daughters themselves—were so encouraged by their parents’ professional endeavors that they followed in their parents’ footsteps.

This has been one of my favorite cover focuses that we have ever put together. I cannot think of another series of articles that had me smiling from ear to ear with each turn of the page. You may not refer to this the next time you are in the operating room, but hopefully the families’ stories that we have included here will motivate you to continue inspiring the next generation of ophthalmologists, whether they are your own children or the children of others.
