Oculus Corvis ST

Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH (Wetzlar, Germany) introduced the Oculus Corvis ST, a noncontact tonometer combined with an ultrahigh-speed Scheimpflug camera. The camera can take more than 4,000 photographs per second, capturing the reaction of the cornea on air impulse, according to a company news release. The tonometer can also be used to identify significant changes in the deformation response of the cornea after corneal ectasia and corneal collagen crosslinking. The Oculus Corvis ST will be available for sale in spring 2012.

SmartTech Laser

Schwind eye-tech-solutions (Kleinostheim, Germany) introduced the SmartTech Laser. Instead of a femtosecond laser, the SmartTech utilizes a microchip laser. The laser operates with light in the ultraviolet (UV) range (355 nm) and produces ultrashort light pulses, each shorter than a billionth of a second. According to a company news release, SmartTech’s short UV laser light wavelengths make it possible to achieve a focus three times finer than that of a femtosecond laser infrared pulse. The UV microchip laser system is designed to separate individual corneal lamella, which leads to precise cuts and smooth cut surfaces as well as better predictability of flap thickness. The laser operates with a normal power supply and does not require a cooling system.
