DVD Series Trains Surgeons Through Interactive Video

This high-quality training tool augments surgical knowledge and skills.

The Video atlas of Eye Surgery—International Edition is an educational video series providing structured training for cataract surgeons at all levels of experience, through high-quality interactive video (Figure 1) and carefully planned narration.

This comprehensive surgical training program was created by an international group of ophthalmologists and draws from a wealth of surgical and teaching experience. The series editor, Brian Little, DO, MA, FRCS, FRCOphth, has assembled a team of 15 experienced and respected innovators and lecturers who contributed to this video atlas series. The first two DVDs in the series are basic technique videos on phacoemulsification and vitreoretinal surgery. They have already been reviewed by key opinion leaders with particularly high acclaim.

In addition to the aforementioned topics, the DVD series will cover glaucoma, oculoplastic, and lachrymal and corneal surgery. Each topic is stratified into basic techniques, challenging cases, and complications for each category and organized into chapters for easy navigation. An interactive utility called the Lecture Pad allows sections of video to be exported for inclusion in lectures or teaching sessions through PowerPoint (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, Washington) furthering the educational value and usability of this series. The electronic medium not only allows the potential for remote access of this material, but also facilitates regular updating.

The phacoemulsification DVD includes more than 30 videos that systematically cover each step of the process, from local anesthesia and draping the patient, to wound closure and completion of the procedure. Classic and advanced techniques are also covered, making this DVD series an informative collection of training tips and tricks. The series on vitreoretinal showcases 25 educational videos depicting various principals and scenerios. For example, a section on scleral bucking delves into indication, marking breaks, indications for drainage, cryotherapy, and encirclement. Anatomically accurate three-dimensional illustrations help provide further clarity of the core surgical principals the authors endorse.

Throughout the entire series, the carefully selected subject matter has been structured with the specific intention of integrating it into postgraduate training programs. Because traditional one-on-one apprenticeship with work-based training is difficult to sustain, the authors offer this series as a high-quality training tool to augment the development of surgical knowledge and skills.

The aim is that this innovative educational series will dovetail together with other programs to effectively train the next generation of doctors.

"Video Atlas of Eye Surgery—Phacoemulsification is the ultimate video training course for cataract surgeons," said David F. Chang, MD, Clinical Professor at the University of California, in a statement to the Eyemovies Foundation (Surrey, UK). "The production quality of the video, the editing, and the graphics are unparalleled. Dr. Little and faculty narrate and illustrate the practical teaching points with great clarity and insight in an easy-to-navigate format. This course will be of immeasurable value to both beginning and experiences phaco surgeons alike."

The Eyemovies Foundation, founded by Dr. Little, is a registered charity that works closely with Vision 2020 (Banjara Hills, India) and contributes profits from this series to support ophthalmology training in the developing world.
