EDITOR’S PAGE

Celebrating the New Year is a timeless tradition that is usually accompanied by reflections on the past and promises made for the future. Just as many of you have resolved to go “out with the old and in with the new,” CRST Europe is doing the same.

Well, sort of...

We’ve committed to “in with the new,” yes, but in several circumstances we fail to see the benefits of going “out with the old.” CRST Europe enjoyed another successful year in 2011, largely because of a stellar line-up of articles written by cataract and refractive surgeons around the world. But kudos must also be given to our Chief Medical Editors, as they serve as the sounding board for our editorial staff. Their generous support has helped us pinpoint hot topics for coverage and countless contributors for our publication. The editors and I appreciate the close collaboration we have with these prestigious surgeons—Sheraz M. Daya, MD, FACP, FACS, FRCS(Ed); Erik L. Mertens, MD, FEBOphth; and Khiun F. Tjia, MD—and I hope that they enjoy working with the staff of CRST Europe, too.

With that said, we do see the benefits of pairing our seasoned Chief Medical Editors with some fresh faces. I would like to take this opportunity to formally introduce our two new Associate Chief Medical Editors, Arthur B. Cummings, MB ChB, FCS(SA), MMed (Ophth), FRCS(Edin), and A. John Kanellopoulos, MD. Dr. Cummings practices at the Wellington Eye Clinic & UPMC Beacon Hospital, Dublin, Ireland, and Dr. Kanellopoulos is the Medical Director of LaserVision.gr and a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at NYU Medical School, New York. In addition to their vast experience in the fields of cataract and refractive surgery, Drs. Cummings and Kanellopoulos are also well versed in the economics of ophthalmology, a strength they share with our veteran chiefs.

In addition to the publication’s long-standing formula, which includes a cover focus, a bonus feature, cataract and refractive surgery feature articles, and several columns including Inside Eyetube.net, Industry Interviews, Today’s Practice, and Cataract/Refractive Surgery Fundamentals, we will be introducing a new feature on smartphone apps. This column will explore various ophthalmic and general apps that cataract and refractive surgeons may find helpful in their daily lives and practices. This piece is kicking off in January as a bonus feature, put together by our new Associate Editor, Callan Navitsky. Callan joined CRST Europe in the later part of 2011 and is already proving to be an integral part of our staff.

In 2012, we will continue to provide you with timely cover focus topics, revising some of our annual features to ensure the content has the most cutting- edge, up-to-date information.

First up, our Annual IOL issue. We’ve been featuring this topic as a cover focus since CRST Europe launched in 2006; however, this year’s coverage puts a new spin on an old topic. In the following pages, our chief medical editors— seasoned vets and newcomers alike—provided case studies for which a panel of surgeons shared their strategies for treatment and identified their choices of IOL. A good number of lens choices were suggested by the surgeons who participated (Michael Amon, MD; Gerd U. Auffarth, MD, PhD; J.M. Bosc, MD; Francesco Carones, MD; John S.M. Chang, MD; Georg Gerten, MD; Jose L. Güell, MD; Ruth Lapid- Gortzak, MD, PhD; António A.P. Marinho, MD, PhD; and Ulrich Mester, MD), and a handful of CRST Europe’s Editorial Board also offered a listing of IOLs that they commonly use. To round out the cover focus, Michael C. Knorz, MD, shares seven pearls for success with premium IOLs and Jorge L. Alió, MD, PhD, highlights top new IOL designs.

From all of us at CRST Europe, best wishes for a happy and healthy 2012. We hope that your resolution includes reading our issues more closely—perhaps even from cover to cover.
